Terms of Membership
I hereby represent that the information contained in my membership application is correct and, if admitted to the membership, agree to be bound by the Code of Ethics, attached as Appendix A, and the bylaws as adopted by the BC Paralegal Association. I further understand that this application is Subject to approval by the BC Paralegal Association.
Code of Ethics
- The duties performed by the Paralegal shall at all times be subject to the supervision of a Lawyer. Paralegals shall not present themselves as lawyers, nor shall they give legal advice to a client.
- A Paralegal shall at all times discharge his or her duties with the utmost honesty and integrity.
- A Paralegal shall work in a conscientious, diligent and efficient manner and shall provide a quality of service which a Lawyer would reasonably expect of a competent Legal Assistant.
- A Paralegal has a duty to hold in strict confidence all information acquired in the course of the professional relationship concerning the business and affairs of the Lawyer and the clients whom they serve. No information concerning these matters shall be disclosed to any person outside the Lawyer’s practice unless the Lawyer expressly authorizes such disclosure or the law requires such disclosure.
- A Paralegal is duty bound to observe all relevant rules and laws regarding the preservation and safekeeping of the property of clients entrusted to the Lawyer.
- A Paralegal shall assist in maintaining the integrity of the legal profession.
- A Paralegal’s conduct towards other members of the legal profession shall be characterized by courtesy and good faith.
- BCPA Members are expected to familiarize themselves with and to adhere to the Law Society of B.C.’s Legal Profession Act, in particular Section 15(1) Authority to Practice Law and any other provincial regulations and with respect to the delivery of legal services in particular. BCPA Privacy Policy
The BC Paralegal Association respects your privacy. The information that you provide is collected to keep in touch with you and to verify your identity for membership processing, maintenance and renewal purposes as well as to develop programs and services to better serve you. We do not provide our information to any outside firms, except where they are providing a technical service or administering our benefits program and agree that our information is confidential.
Your info is only made public at your discretion. For instance voting members may opt to have their contact information included in published legal directories that are available to the legal community.
Your information is made available to other members at your discretion should you opt to participate in internal member directories. Members are asked to respect the privacy of their fellow members by limiting the use of the contact information shared here for their own personal purposes. Any abuse occurring by members accessing the internal directories will result in warnings and the possible suspension or termination of membership benefits and membership itself.
Should your membership lapse we will erase our records and shred any hardcopies after a grace period. The grace period allows you to renew within a limited period without having to provide supporting documents should your membership lapse. The time period is at the discretion of our membership chair but is unlikely to exceed a year or two.

BCPA Refund Policy
BCPA Membership Refund/Cancellation Policy
The BC Paralegal Association ("BCPA") reserves the right to refuse or cancel a membership in the BCPA at any time and for any reason.
If BCPA refuses a new or renewing membership, registrants will be offered a refund for the remaining portion of their membership at the time of termination.
Membership Cancellation by Participant
Membership cancellations received within seven (7) business days of registration may be eligible to receive a full refund.
Cancellations received after the stated deadline will not be eligible for a refund.
Cancellations will be accepted via e-mail, and must be received by the stated cancellation deadline.
All benefits and incentives received by registrant must be cancelled/returned to the BCPA.
All refund requests must be made by the registrant or credit card holder.
Refund requests must include the name of the registrant and/or transaction number.
Refunds will be credited back to the original credit card used for payment.
These above policies apply to all BCPA memberships unless otherwise noted in the corresponding program materials. Please read all individual program information thoroughly.

BCPA Event Refund/Cancellation Policy
Event Cancellation by BCPA
The BC Paralegal Association (“BCPA”) reserves the right to cancel an event due to low enrollment or other circumstances which would make the event non-viable.
If BCPA cancels an event, registrants will be offered a full refund.
Should circumstances arise that result in the postponement of an event, BCPA has the right to either issue a full refund or transfer registration to the same event at the new, future date.
Registration Cancellation by Participant
Unless specifically stated on registration materials, the deadline to receive a refund for your registration is seven (7) business days before the event.
Registration cancellations received prior to the deadline may be eligible to receive a full refund.
Cancellations received after the stated deadline will not be eligible for a refund.
Refunds will not be available for registrants who choose not to attend an event.
Cancellations will be accepted in writing only via e-mail and must be received by the stated cancellation deadline.
All refund requests must be made by the attendee or credit card holder.
