Membership

The BCPA is an advocate to help paralegals get the most out of their profession.  The Board of Directors represents paralegals across the province with regional directors in the lower mainland, interior and Vancouver Island. Members include paralegals working at law firms, in-house legal departments, government ministries, contractors working for lawyers, as well as students enrolled in paralegal programs, educational administrators and others.

The definition of a paralegal according to the BCPA Bylaws is as follows:

“Paralegal” means a person with education, training and knowledge of the substantive and procedural aspects of law, who is employed or retained by or for the purposes of working with a Member of the Law Society in a capacity or function which involves the performance of legal work, under the ultimate direction and guidance of a Member of the Law Society, or duties of specifically-delegated substantive legal work which requires sufficient knowledge of legal concepts that in the absence of a the paralegal the Member of the Law Society would perform.

Membership Categories & Requirements

Any applicant who supports the purposes of the Association may apply to the Board for membership.  Applicants admitted to the Association as members shall be bound by the Code of Ethics as set out in Annex 1 of the Bylaws.

 

VOTING MEMBER CATEGORIES, QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS:

VOTING MEMBER - $95.00

The individual MUST be currently employed as a paralegal and have successfully completed all requirements of a paralegal program at:

  1. Capilano University (Paralegal Degree, Diploma or P/T and Distance Certificate programs); or
  2. Vancouver Community College (Paralegal Diploma or Certificate program); or
  3. University of the Fraser Valley (Paralegal Diploma or Certificate program); or
  4. an educational facility approved by and at the discretion of the Board.

REQUIREMENT:  Must submit a copy of your diploma, certificate or transcript to support your application and the written acknowledgement to be bound by the Code of Ethics and the Bylaws of the Association, which is available upon completing the registration process online.

OR

The individual MUST be currently employed as a paralegal and have a minimum of five (5) years of employment as a Paralegal in British Columbia.

REQUIREMENT:  Applicant's supervising lawyer must declare in writing the number of years the Applicant has been employed as a paralegal by the firm and the written acknowledgement to be bound by the Code of Ethics and the Bylaws of the Association, which is available upon completing the registration process online.

 

NON-VOTING MEMBER CATEGORIES, QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS:

STUDENT - $25.00

The individual MUST be enrolled in a Paralegal training program at:

  1. Capilano University (Paralegal Degree, Diploma or P/T and Distance Certificate programs); or
  2. Vancouver Community College (Paralegal Diploma or Certificate program); or
  3. University of the Fraser Valley (Paralegal Diploma or Certificate program); or
  4. an educational facility approved by and at the discretion of the Board.

REQUIREMENT:  Written declaration by the Program Director and the written acknowledgement to be bound by the Code of Ethics and the Bylaws of the Association, which is available upon completing the registration process online.

AFFILIATE - $95.00

The individual who meets one of the following requirements:

  1. an individual that is employed as a Paralegal, with less than 5 years employment as a Paralegal in British Columbia; or
  2. an individual that has successfully completed a Paralegal Program and is not currently employed as a Paralegal.  Please submit a copy of your certificate.  
  3. an individual that is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia, or other Law Society at the discretion of the Board; or
  4. an individual that is a student member of an educational institution endorsing Paralegals.

REQUIREMENT:  Written acknowledgement to be bound by the Code of Ethics and the Bylaws of the Association, which is available upon completing the registration process online.

CORPORATE - $200.00

Corporate membership are for organizations or corporations which support the purposes of the Association.  This category is not intended to be used by firms as a replacement or substitute individual paralegal memberships.

 

Members must abide by the BCPA Code of Ethics.
