This free conference will explore the intersection of gender, race, and the law, and how this impacts the lives of Indigenous women and girls. The conference will draw on the findings and recommendations of the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Inquiry and of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
It will bring together lawyers, judges, academics, and individuals with lived experience to provide a deeper understanding of the context of Indigenous women's lives, including how to adopt a trauma-informed practice in order to advocate effectively for Indigenous women and girls. Opportunities will be provided to engage in dialogue, exchange knowledge and wisdom, and develop together best practices in this critical area of the law.
You will learn about:
- what lawyers for Indigenous women and girls need to know in order to represent their clients competently
- how intergenerational trauma, poverty, lack of resources, and marginalization impact legal issues for Indigenous women and girls
- what you need to know so you can do your job better as a lawyer in any area of law, including human rights, criminal, family, child welfare, employment, etc.
This conference is being offered at no cost to welcome both the legal and the wider community to participate. Join us to gain a better understanding of the challenges faced by Indigenous women, and to learn how you can do your part to improve the legal system in BC.
