CLEBC Medical Legal Conference 2016

21 Oct 2016
9:00am - 4:15pm PDT

Registration for this event has passed

The twin disciplines of medicine and law naturally have many points of intersection. In the profession of medicine there is an interest in compliance with legal and regulatory standards and the avoidance of medical malpractice claims. In the profession of law, the medical dimension arises where there are injured parties and claims in the context of accidents, occupational health, and medical care.

This comprehensive conference will examine an eclectic array of issues of current and ongoing relevance for doctors, lawyers, nurses, and legal support staff. This dual focus conference may qualify for CME (Continuing Medical Education) credits with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC in addition to qualifying for CLE (Continuing Legal Education) credits with the Law Society of BC.

N.B. The application for CME accreditation is currently in process, but may not be resolved in advance of conference day (October 21, 2016). CLEBC regrets any inconvenience this may cause registrants.

At this course you will learn:

  • the current state of the law with medical assistance in dying

  • rural medical practice and risk management issues

  • the complex issues around the prescription of opioids

  • medical and legal causation — an issue at the centre of most medical negligence claims

  • to avoid bad decisions — what the science is telling us

  • to effectively prepare expert evidence in litigation

  • to manage medical legal matters in litigation
